Re: tbi issue
It probably has old spark plugs and wires and a check engine light on.

Re: tbi issue
Cold blooded TBI is going to run rich. Check the T-stat, should be a 195.

Re: tbi issue
Maybe check your temperature sending unit. I believe there're two. On a different, more computerized vehicle, I've had it nearly not start because it couldn't cope with not having that information. Sometimes the computer doesn't guess well. Also, if you don't have a three wire oxygen sensor you might want to switch to that. Especially if you have headers. It takes a little while for the sensor to get warm enough to read correctly. And sometimes headers never get warm enough, depending where the bung is placed. The three wire will warm up the sensor electrically and give you good readings right off the bat. Good luck man, I hope you get it figured out! Let us know.

Re: tbi issue
But a OB11 to usb cable and then download WinALDL free software. You will be able to read and flag data and data log. It will take the guessing out of if it is TBI related.

Re: tbi issue
Oh, shoot. Could you put up a picture of your cable with relevant names/numbers if you have a chance? If really like to get in on that.

Re: tbi issue
For less than $300 you can buy a used Snap-On MT2500 Scanner good to at least late 90s that does great for this kind of thing. Just another option.

Re: tbi issue
5025speed, I hope you don't mind that we've added a little sidetrack in here about getting codes and data from the OBD1 engines.
MARKDTN, thanks for the idea on the snap-on scanner. I've been thinking that I need to pick one of those up, but it does appeal to me to get some visibility into what's going on with the engine. It seems like it's also possible to find out what conditions precipitated the code if I get the cable and hook it up to a laptop. I'll admit I'm intrigued by that. |
