Re: Starting to start starting a C4 conversion on my 84 SWB GMC

Well it's been awhile since my last post. I finally have some progress to show. And more should happen soon. I am moving at the end of Aug and since most of Aug is taken up with other things I'm trying to get the truck driving by the end of July. Here you can see I've done the final install of the Corvette front suspension. It is all sand blasted and coated with Shark Hide to prevent corrosion. I painted the Corvette wheel hubs and brake calipers/brackets with silver caliper paint. Installed with new pads and drilled/slotted rotors. My first try at plumbing brakes and it went ok. I used a copper-zinc hydraulic hardline from the Parker Store. I polished every piece on my buffing wheel. Now my brakes are complete and I plan to bleed the brakes soon. I bought Dot 5 silicon brake fluid because even though it is expensive it doesn't eat your paint. Installed my new brake booster and master cylinder, both are stainless steel. Installed a new Be Cool radiator and an aluminum fan shroud with a 16" fan. Coolant lines are run with mandrel bent aluminum tubing and red silicone couplers. I have a new Sanden A/C compressor for my A/C and another identical one for an engine driven air pump for the air ride. I'm finishing up installing the power steering lines and after a couple vacuum lines and fuel lines I'm ready for all the fluids. Then I can try to turn the key. My 3 piece rims are currently at a tire shop getting a final straightening and Pirelli 265/35/22 front and 295/30/22 rears. I'm really looking forward to getting the truck off the jack stands. The back of the truck is my biggest hurdle now. I recently welded in some rear upper shock mounts which leaves me with:
mounting the rear sway bar bushings
creating something to retain the fuel cell
running the fuel lines and tail light wires
Then finally my bro and I will paint the frame back-half.

Everything looks great. Do you have any better pictures of how you mounted the 2 sandens in there?

Re: Starting to start starting a C4 conversion on my 84 SWB GMC

I wasn't planning to share this trick yet but since you asked here it is;
On the top bracket you just push the compressor's front tabs up against the mounting bracket surface then mark where to trim the rear tabs to mate them up. I chose to cut the bracket's rear tabs in 1/2 and trim about a 1/5 off the total thickness of the compressor's rear tabs. The lower compressor is similar, just cutting away the bracket to make room for the compressor's tabs. Of course my upper compressor will be A/C and the lower will be my engine driven air compressor for the air ride system.

Re: Starting to start starting a C4 conversion on my 84 SWB GMC

Woohoo! I got my wheels back from the tire shop today with Pirelli 265/35/22 fronts and 295/30/22 rears. At lunch time I had a moment to try them on. I love how they fit.

Re: Starting to start starting a C4 conversion on my 84 SWB GMC

So.... for the upper factory a/c spot, the spacing on the opposite sides of the Sanden compressor was good, you just had to remove enough material to allow it to fit within the OE bracket??

I've seen the Vintage Air 'adapter' brackets but this is much cleaner....

That's correct the bolt spacing was the same I just drilled out the bolt holes on the compressor to the size of my bolts from the bracket.

Sweet. I purchased a new R4 compressor & lines for my SBC serp swap on my BBC but havent installed them yet. I think I'd rather go w/the Sanden for reliability. Do you know which comp you have (p/n)?

Thanks. I know there are different sizes/apps so knowing the specific number that fit will be an advantage. Truck is coming along nicely BTW. I cant wait to get my C4 stuff installed!

Wow- very cool!
When i see the stance and the big wheels there is a question on my mind:" How the heck do you drive through curves and how is the turning radius????"

I know the pictures make the front wheels look really close to the fenders but they aren't that close in reality. I did cut a nice radius out of the inner fenders to make more clearance for lowering it all the way down. But everything is clearing fine now, especially at ride height. ;-)

Re: Starting to start starting a C4 conversion on my 84 SWB GMC

This has been a long time coming! I finally drove the truck somewhere!
I live in Denver, CO now and Saturday was the start of the Golden Super Cruise. It's the first Sat of the month from May until Oct. Of course my truck isn't done but it drives pretty good. I still need inner fenders, front shocks and to finish up the bed area. Oh ya and I really need an Accuair system.
