[PROJECT] "Hot Rod" 1931 model a Bonneville/ Rolling bones style

So I had an opportunity to buy a 1931 model body, full hood, 32 grille and a 32 frame. For running gear I'll be using 1941 ford front and rear axles, 59A-b flathead V8 with a 39' 3 speed top loader transmission hooked to 41' pedals. The chassis is pinched to fit a model A and then the frame horns were removed and the rails pinched more to tuck them in where the hood sides will be. It will ride on 35-36 (I believe) wire wheels with 750-16 rear and 500-16 ribbed dirt track tires up front.

At first I was going to use the 1941 ford x section

However I didn't like the looks of it and how it didn't flow back into the chassis right on the rear. So I made my own.

Next it was time to make some motor mounts







Then I checked fit and started to set up the clutch arm and linkage

Great work on the frame and cool project! Nice work on the x member too. I'm currently boxing my frame and making a tubular x member on my 40 Ford now.

Went to a model A frame building class a number of years ago.
Was surprised at how complex they are. I suppose I had model T on the brain?

The wire wheels would be '35, the '36 had the large "volkswagon" style bolt pattern wheels.

Frame is looking good.

Thanks, Ya it fun setting up this chassis. A bit different than a 2x4 box one, the rails took some pressure to get them to the width I needed.

Well I worked on the frame this weekend got the x member 95% done just need to get some tubing to bridge the top together. Got the pedals mounted and got the side/supports made and welded in. I also got the rear 2 feet of the frame boxed. Also got the tires in and I mounted them a work this week ill get those pictures up this weekend.

Well I have finally got some more progress done. Last weekend I got the center section of the frame tied together and the frame off the table. I mocked up the axles just to see what it will look like. Also split the wishbones and then I had to order some parts so that was it tell this weekend. Yesterday I got the old spring perches out and new flat top one installed, mounted up the posie spring and drilled the wishbones for the sleeve for the new perch mounts. Mocked everything up to find out the shackles were to short. So today I made longer ones and got the sleeves welded in and chassis setting on its own weight.

Bolted the motor and trans in place for weight and to set caster. Here's the front end setting on its own weight.












Tomorrow I hope to get the wishbones cut down and the threaded bung welded in and the frame mounts drilled and the tapered mount also welded in place. I have to ream the taper a little deeper.

Well I got the wishbones mounted today. Now to figure out the rear...

Well in order to get the rear setup at the right height I had to set the body on the frame. Well I had to cut and rebuild the sub frame in order for it the set on the frame right. I also got the body squared and bolted to the frame and made a custom rear body mount. A reattached the shortened rear frame horns so I can run a spreader bar and a push bar. Made a simple smooth firewall and started setting up the rear suspension.

Anyways enough talking and on to the pictures.

Also got a longer front spring and fixed the shackle angles

Well here's an update, better late then never...




I got the rear suspension all tack up except for the gussets between the hairpins, there speed holed but I haven't cut them to size yet. Built a pan hard bar and axle bracket.

Then I decided it was time to chop it. I started with 5" chop but ended a 5 3/4" and I love it. Got the rear and side windows lined up just have to get the front pie cut and lined up its about 1/2" total off. anyways here are the pictures.

So as I suspected there was/ is a lot of bondo on the car so after the tops welded up the body will come of and Im going to stripe it of it.
