Anyone have pics of an original 402?

I'm going to do a "restoration" on my engine compartment, so I'd like to see some pics of what it's suppose to look like. I'd like to see brackets and line routing, stickers and the like.

My engine I believe is close to original, but it's had a few Bubba repairs of the years. One thing it has that I'm not sure about is chrome valve covers. The passenger side cover still has a "Tonawanda" sticker on it, but I'm wondering if it originally had painted covers. The reason I wonder is I bought it from the original owner and he still was using the original rims and hub caps. Didn't seem like the type that would spring for chrome valve covers...

It still has the bracket for the smog pump, but the pump is long gone. I'm not sure I'll go to that extent anyway.

It still has a few of the spark plug heat shields, option codes on the fire wall and stuff like that.

Do these engines come with the serial number stamped on them? If so, where?

Thanks!

It's a 72 Cheyenne Super, if that makes a difference.

This is the only pic I have, it's a board members truck. Not very close up but it's a start.

Here's a link to Sameyrasmea72's truck. He's an expert on the Big Block trucks.

Hi this is Paul (sameyrasme72's dad). I am not as knowledgeble as Jason but I am nearly positive It did not come with chrome valve covers although some of these trucks did come with the Tonawanda stickers on front part of right valve cover.

Re: Anyone have pics of an original 402?

Technically they did not come with a serial No although they do have a series of no's in front of engine code ex TLM which corresponds with a number on the protecto plate that came with the warrant card. Very few trucks still have this because once the truck was out of warranty which was only 3 yr or 36000 miles, dealers were instructed to take this plate thus reducing chance of warranty fraud.

Re: Anyone have pics of an original 402?

Amazingly, the protecto-plate came with it - I'll check that out Paul.

I need pics of the whole engine compartment too - not just the engine. Keep them coming guys. I need all the help I can get!

Thanks

Re: Anyone have pics of an original 402?

Powell72 posted a pic of my engine bay, the chrome valve covers are a car thing not on trucks. Aside from the stainless bolts holding it together, my truck is pretty close to exact from the research I have done. I have since gone back to the flat 402 intake and correct top alt bracket (70 and 71 are alittle different - they have a tab welded to the top that 69 does not). The hoses are all Gm hoses except the top rad hose which is a reproduction. If you need updated photos tell me what you need to see and I will try to help you out. Harold

Don't want to hijack this thread, but I had posted a similar one a few weeks back...Your engine bay looks amazing...I would be intersted in any pics you had as well....also what is the difference in these alt brackets you speak of...I believe mine looks like the one in the pic?

Thanks, Ron

Beautiful engine compartment you have there Harold. There's something about the stock look that when done to a level of detail such as yours is a thing of beauty to me.

I would love to have overhead shots that look down between each fender and radiator - and the engine. Any commentary you have on the colors you used would be really helpful.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

Re: Anyone have pics of an original 402?

I will get pictures for both of you, but it will be friday. The truck is stored 2 counties away and is hard to get to it during the week. I will also include some pics of the engine bay of my 4x4 sb to compare to. If there are other particulars just let me know ahead of time and I will try to get what you want to see. I will include colors etc. as well. I will also try to get a close up of the alt bracket as well, as it is very similar to the one pictured w/ one small change in a mount location. This was due to the removal of a tab from the intake in 70 or 71 .

I'd love to see more pics of it if you have them. Overhead shots are great for seeing how things are routed. If there are still factory markings I'd like to see those too

thanks!

Here are a few pics that I have saved of a '70 from an old ebay auction. This truck is supposed to be unrestored.

There were GM part#s on those zip-ties.

Darn!I knew someone would bust me.What I meant was more that it isn`t restored. As in,it wasn`t detailed down to a tee.It was rebuilt and may not all be correct on hardware. But,what is GM is what came original to the truck.I only had this one picture...at all.It would be nice to get old original pictures.

Very seldom do I get to bust anybody, let alone you, for something being said or shown incorrect. I seem to be getting forgetful as I age. Things I use to know as fact, I now can't remember for sure, and words I use to be able to spell, I can't seem to remember the right way anymore. Sometimes I wonder about my misspent youth and the damage I may have done!

Here is a pic of my 402, I think it is mostly original. The PO put in high energy ignition system. The engine number is just in front of the right cylinder head.

Re: Anyone have pics of an original 402?

I need some help on wiring. My factory schematic isn't much help. I need to know what wire (color) connects to the solenoid on the drivers side of the carb.

Here's my engine:

And heres one from 71 Supers that appears to show a red wire:

If it is the red wire, can you tell me wher the other end of it winds up going?

Also, there are two sensors, one on each head, that look like temperature sensors. The one in my pic above is incorrect, as it went to an aftermarket temp gauge. Can someone tell me the wiring info for those? Also, the green/white wire on the temp sensor goes where?

Thanks a bunch!
