"Need-2-Carryall-8" 1972 Suburban

Here we go again...with the birth of my 6th child, expected in May, I have decided my next build will be a Suburban my family of 8 can enjoy...hence the name. I learned my lesson on the Blazer, so I have decided to start with a solid driver and do a mild build. It will be done in phases.

About the Suburban - I purchased it from the original owner. I looked for a solid Bronze Suburban for a long time and had to go to Colorado to get this one. It was purchased new in April of 1972. The org owner included the original BOS (org purchase price $4941), owners manual, build sheet as well as a folder full of receipts and other documentation. Used as a DD until the 90’s when he decided to, in his words, “fix it up a little and take better care of it.” He painted the exterior, rebuilt the motor, made a few interior improvements and started storing it in the garage. It has been driven very little since. The only rust repair was some minor rust in 2 rockers and they were just patched, not replaced.

The Plan:

Phase 1:
Interior - Add a 3rd row, buckets up front and reupholster with some bling! Panels and carpet look great so they stay.

Phase 2:
Suspension - Porterbuilt arms and bags upfront and to keep it consistent...PB arms and bags in the rear. Spindles and better disc Brakes (probably CPP)

Wheels - Leaning toward 20/22” Centerline Smoothies “Delmo Style”

Phase 3 - DRIVE IT - ENJOY IT until I win the lottery then...

Phase 4 - Dropmembers and LSx Swap

Enough talking - enjoy the pics...

NICE!!!! I love this truck, I'm pretty sure it was for sale last year and I was drooling all over it then. It's awesome to see it getting the PBS treatment. I've got three kids now and as they age I hope to add a Burb to my fleet.

Yeah - "replace rear bumper" should have been part of phase 1!

Re: "Need-2-Carryall-8" 1972 Suburban

you could move the narrow 2nd row seat to the 3rd position and pick up a wide bench for the second row. your older kids will thank you for the extra elbow room. never had a problem climbing over the sat in my dad's 72 when i was a kid. and you realize, just as soon as you fit those bucket seats, you'll end up needing another spot (may i suggest some b/c, or just find some self control?....lol) . maybe some buddy buckets upholstered to match the rest of the interior would be a good compromise? a black on ??? highlander plaid style would look so nice in that truck!

as for the truck itself, just get the correct rear bumper on there and drive the thing. what is with all this lowering everything?....it's called a truck people! i carry a step stool in mine for those who have a little trouble getting in. looks too pretty to mess with, especially since it is a 1 owner all these years. as for brakes....i put some Hawk Severe Duty carbon-ceramic pads on the front of my 72 C20 Burb (will fit your a C10 also) and they bite like you wouldn't believe! 3/4 ton's have a bigger brake booster....not a bad upgrade if you plan to have your family aboard!

It is an aftermarket unit added in the 90s by PO. It is made by Old Air Products.

I just picked up a 67 from the original owner who used it with her 14 kids. No third row seat. The younger ones just all piled in the back. It hasn't been driven since 1980 before seat belts were required up here. CPS would take all your kids away if you did that now.
